Cookie policy
We set none. The ads and analytics do.
This page itemises every cookie and browser store you pick up on taxi-fare.com.au — what it is, who set it, what it does and how long it lasts. It is the detailed companion to the privacy policy.
The short version
We write no cookie of our own. There is no login to keep you signed into and no profile of you to store, so nothing on this site depends on a cookie we control.
The cookies you do pick up here belong to the scripts we load: Mediavine, the ad manager that sells this site’s ad space and pays for the tariff research; Google, whose ad tags serve some of those ads; and two analytics tools, Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity, that tell us which pages get used and where the calculator confuses people. Every one of those cookies is readable by its vendor, not by us. You can turn ad personalisation off in one click at My Ad Center and keep using the site exactly as before.
What is actually set
Google changes its own cookie names without notice, so treat the names below as representative rather than exhaustive. The categories, the party responsible, and the purposes are the parts we keep accurate.
| Name | Set by | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mediavine ad-partner cookies | Mediavine's demand partners, on their own domains | Mediavine auctions each ad slot across exchanges including Index Exchange, PubMatic, TripleLift, OpenX, Magnite, Criteo, The Trade Desk, GumGum, Yieldmo, Kargo, Media.net, Nexxen and Undertone. Each may set an ID cookie to bid, cap repeats and count impressions. | Varies by vendor, typically up to 13 months |
| euconsent-v2, addtl_consent | Mediavine's certified consent platform | Stores your consent choices under the IAB Transparency & Consent Framework. Only shown, and only set, for visitors from the EEA, UK and Switzerland. | Up to 12 months |
| __gads, __gpi | Google ad tags (on this domain) | Measures ad impressions, caps how often you see the same ad, and detects invalid traffic. | Up to 13 months |
| IDE, DSID | Google (doubleclick.net) | Personalises ads based on your prior visits to this and other sites, and attributes ad clicks. | Up to 13 months (DSID ~2 weeks) |
| test_cookie | Google (doubleclick.net) | One-off check that your browser accepts cookies at all. | Minutes |
| UID, UIDR | Comscore (scorecardresearch.com) | Audience measurement Mediavine runs across its publishers — counts how many distinct browsers saw a page, so advertisers can size the audience. Not used to build a profile we can see. | Up to 2 years |
| _ga, _ga_XXXXXXXXXX | Google Analytics 4 (on this domain) | Tells us which pages and routes get used, and whether people arrive from search, so we know which tariff data is worth maintaining. Aggregate reporting only — we never look up an individual. | Up to 2 years (browser cookie); event data 14 months at Google |
| _clck, _clsk, CLID | Microsoft Clarity (clarity.ms) | Heatmaps and anonymised session replays of how the calculator gets used — where people tap, where they get stuck. Clarity masks typed text by default, so your pickup and destination are not readable in a replay. | _clck 1 year, _clsk 1 day, CLID up to 1 year |
| theme | taxi-fare.com.au (localStorage, not a cookie) | Remembers your light/dark mode choice. No tracking value. | Until you clear site data |
| Vercel platform cookies | Vercel (our host) | Load balancing and DDoS protection. Carry no user identifier. | Session / short-lived |
Nothing in this table is set by us. The two analytics cookies live on this domain, which makes them first-party in the technical sense, but they are written and read by Google’s and Microsoft’s scripts — we see only the aggregate reports.
Advertising cookies
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
You may opt out of personalised advertising at any time. Opting out does not remove ads — you will still see them, they just stop being tailored to you, and some cookies remain for frequency capping and fraud detection.
- Mediavine’s advertising privacy notice and partner list
Who Mediavine lets bid on the slots here, and what each does with the request. The fuller account is in Mediavine’s legal and privacy centre.
- Google My Ad Center
Turns off ad personalisation across Google’s network, including the ads here.
- aboutads.info
Industry-wide opt-out covering many third-party ad vendors at once.
- How Google uses cookies in advertising
Google’s own description of what its ad cookies do and how long they last.
Mediavineis the ad manager for this site: it decides which ads fill each slot by auctioning it across the exchanges named in the table above, and Google’s ad tags are among the buyers. If we ever change networks or add one, it gets listed here and on the privacy policy, with the date below bumped.
How to control cookies
- Block or clear them in your browser. Every major browser lets you clear cookies and site data, or block third-party cookies entirely. Doing either is completely safe here — the fare tool keeps working, and you lose nothing saved, because we save nothing.
- Turn off ad personalisation. Use My Ad Center for Google, or aboutads.info for the wider industry.
- Opt out of the analytics. Google’s Analytics opt-out add-on stops Google Analytics on every site including this one, and Microsoft Clarity honours the Global Privacy Control signal your browser can send. Blocking third-party scripts does the same job for both.
- Use an ad blocker if you prefer. We don’t detect them, don’t nag about them, and won’t gate the fare tool behind disabling one. The ads fund the work, but the data stays free either way.
Visitors from the EEA, UK and Switzerland
This site serves an Australian audience, where there is no consent-before-cookies requirement. If you are browsing from the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, Mediavine’s certified consent platform runs instead: you will see a consent prompt before any personalised ad or its cookies load, and your choice is stored in the euconsent-v2cookie listed above. Declining means non-personalised or limited ads — the fare tool and every rate page work identically either way. Visitors from US states with their own privacy laws get Mediavine’s equivalent “do not sell or share” control in the same prompt.
Changes to this policy
A new vendor, a new cookie category, or a changed retention period means this page and the date below both get updated. There is no mailing list to notify, because we don’t collect email addresses — this page is the single source of truth.
