We don’t collect what we don’t need.

taxi-fare.com.au is a public-interest calculator. We don’t ask for your name, email, phone number, address, or payment details. There are no user accounts, and we hold no profile of you.

What we do need: the pickup and destination addresses you type into the calculator. Those go to Google’s Routes and Geocoding APIs so we can compute a fare estimate. That trip is the entire data flow on our side.

The one thing we don’t control: the calculator is free because ads run on it. Mediavine manages that ad space and auctions each slot to advertisers, Google’s ad tags among them, and those vendors set their own cookies in your browser to measure and target the ads. That happens between you and them — we never see it at user level, and you can switch the personalisation off at My Ad Center. Details below.

• Address strings you type

  The pickup and destination you enter (or click from a prefilled route) are sent to our server, which forwards them to Google Maps for geocoding and route planning. We keep an anonymous, lat/lng-bucketed cache of routes for 24 hours so the same trip doesn’t re-bill Google twice. The cache key is a geohash, not your IP or any device identifier.

• Page-view and usage analytics

  Google Analytics 4 and Vercel Web Analytics record that a page was viewed, the referring site, your country and rough device type. We read it in aggregate — which routes and rate pages are worth maintaining — and never look up an individual. GA4 sets cookies to do this; they are itemised on the cookie page.

• Anonymised session replays and heatmaps

  Microsoft Clarity records how the calculator gets used — taps, scrolls, where people stall — and replays it back to us without any identity attached. Clarity masks typed text by default, so the addresses you enter are not readable in a replay, and there is nothing in it that names you. It exists so a confusing step in the fare flow can be found and fixed rather than guessed at.

• Core Web Vitals samples

  Vercel Speed Insights samples LCP / INP / CLS performance numbers from real browser sessions. The data is aggregated by URL pattern, not user.

• Ad-serving data (collected by Mediavine and its partners)

  Mediavine manages the ads that fund this site, and auctions each slot to exchanges including Google. Their tags read the page they are on, plus your browser, device type, approximate location and cookie state, to decide which ad to show and whether it was seen. They are the collectors here, not us — what comes back to our dashboard is aggregate: impressions, viewability and earnings by page. We never receive a user-level report, and we can’t link an ad view to a fare you calculated.

• Standard request logs

  Our hosting platform (Vercel) keeps short-lived access logs containing the request URL, HTTP status, response time, and IP. These exist so we can debug outages and detect abuse; they roll off automatically.

• No user accounts, names, email addresses, phone numbers or postal addresses.
• No payment details — taxi-fare.com.au is ad-supported, and we never see your card.
• No tracking pixel or cross-site identifier of our own. The ad and analytics cookies on this site belong to Mediavine’s partners, Google and Microsoft — we can’t read them, and we don’t combine them with anything.
• No data sold to or shared with brokers, ride-share companies, or operators. We don’t hand your addresses, or anything else you type, to the ad system.
• No e-mail newsletters, push notifications, or “sign up to see your fare” gates.

We set no cookie of our own — there is no login and no profile of you to keep. What does end up on your device comes from the scripts we load:

• Advertising cookies (Mediavine’s partners, Google, third-party) — third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies and similar storage to serve ads on this site, including ads based on your prior visits to this or other sites. Google’s use of advertising cookies lets it and its partners serve ads to you based on your visit here and elsewhere on the internet. None of that storage is ours, and none of it is readable by us.
• Analytics cookies (Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity) — these count page views and record anonymised replays of how the calculator is used. They sit on this domain but are written and read by Google’s and Microsoft’s scripts; we see only the aggregate reports. Every name and retention period is listed on the cookie page.
• Theme preference — your light/dark mode choice is stored in browser localStorage so the site remembers it on next visit. No tracking value.
• Platform cookies — Vercel, our hosting platform, may set short-lived technical cookies for load balancing and DDoS protection. They carry no user identifier and aren’t accessible to us.

You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google My Ad Center and out of third-party vendors’ personalised advertising at aboutads.info. You’ll still see ads — they just stop being tailored to you. Clearing cookies and localStorage in your browser settings is always safe here: nothing about the calculator stops working, and you don’t lose any saved data, because there isn’t any.

• Google LLC privacy policy

  Routes API, Geocoding API, Places Autocomplete and Static Maps API. Your typed address strings flow through Google to compute the fare. We do not give Google any other data about you.

• Mediavine, Inc. privacy policy

  Manages the advertising on this site: it decides where slots go, auctions each one across its demand partners and Google, and runs the consent prompt shown to EEA/UK visitors. Those partners receive your IP address, user agent and the page you’re on as part of each ad request — standard for any ad on the web. This is what pays for the tariff research, so the calculator can stay free and unpaywalled with no booking funnel attached.

• Google Ads / AdSense how Google uses ad data

  One of the buyers Mediavine auctions this site’s ad space to, and a third-party vendor using cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Opt out of personalisation via the links above.

• Microsoft Corporation privacy statement

  Microsoft Clarity provides the heatmaps and anonymised session replays we use to find where the calculator confuses people. Typed text is masked before it leaves your browser, so your addresses are not in the recording.

• Vercel Inc. privacy policy

  Hosts the site, runs the calculator’s server-side functions, caches routes, and records anonymous Core Web Vitals. Subject to Vercel’s standard processing terms.

• Google Analytics privacy policy

  Page-view and event analytics. The dataset for this site is small — which pages get viewed, from where, on what kind of device — and is what tells us which routes and rate pages are worth keeping. You can block it site-wide with Google’s opt-out add-on.

• Route cache: 24 hours, keyed by geohash and time-of-day bucket. Never linked to a user or IP.
• Geocoding cache: 30 days, keyed by a SHA-256 of the normalised address string. Never linked to a user.
• Server access logs: rolling 30 days at the hosting platform, standard infrastructure retention.
• Analytics: Google Analytics event data is kept 14 months at Google; aggregate page-view and referrer summaries indefinitely. Microsoft Clarity keeps a session replay for about 30 days. None of it identifies an individual.
• Advertising cookies: set and retained by Mediavine’s ad partners and by Google under its own policy, typically months rather than days. We can neither read nor delete them; your browser and Google’s ad settings both can.

The Australian Privacy Principles give you the right to access and correct any personal information an organisation holds about you. We don’t collect any, so there is nothing for you to access or correct here — and for the ad data we don’t hold, the holder is Google, so requests about it go through your Google account’s data controls. If you’d like an explicit confirmation of any of that for a compliance reason, email hello@taxi-fare.com.au and we’ll respond in writing within 30 days.

taxi-fare.com.au is a public information page suitable for any age. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone — children included. Because we never ask for personal data in the first place, there is nothing further to do here.

If we change a meaningful data-flow fact (new third party, new retention period, new cookie), we’ll update the date below and note the change. There’s no mailing list to notify — this page is the single source of truth.
